Why is when discussing immigration and refugees it brings the absolute worst in people out?

We have a lot of people arriving in Australia by boat from countries like Afghanistan and Iraq. Some right wingers are suggesting we let the Navy open fire on them or sink their boats. Why cant people discuss immigration and refugees in a sensible way?

7. OMG Comrade! Don't you know, THEY'RE HERE!! The refugees are already here, infesting our Coles markets, buying our Home Brand Hawaiian pizza and Smiths potato crisps! They are obviously terrorists, with their headscaves and children and what not... we should be afraid Comrade... very afraid! But no, it does sadden me the venom people harbour for refugees and immigrants. I think politicains are partly at fault on this one. They love to exploit people's ignorance... sadly perpetuating fear and hate helps them win more votes.
