Going to visit Maine from New Brunswick, where should we go?

My Friends and I are from Nova Scotia and want to go up to Maine for a few days. We have no idea where we should go but we want to try to stay close to the New Brunswick border so we don't have to drive forever. Any suggestions where to go and what to do? All we know is we want to do a little shopping, but after that we are up for an adventure!

  1. i live in maine...your best bet might be Bar Harbor...if you have a few days its worth it to go to portland, its not more than about 3-4 hours depedning on your starting point...portland has all the shopping in the world in the Old Port..some of the tourist towns (like bar harbor) are closed right now whereas portland is fully open year round..plus theres alot to see within a few minuts of portland
  2. Beth your best bet will probably be to visit Bar Harbor and Acadia National park area especially if you have never been there it is a must see. It would be about a 2 hour drive from the border crossing in Calais. Bar Harbor is not "closed" by any means it just isn't nearly as busy this time of year, some of the businesses may not be opent yet but many of them will be. This is a great time of year to check out the natural beauty of the park. The Portland area and the Old Port definately are good places for shopping but that certainly would not keep you close to the border. Another option might be to go into Bangor which is only about 40 minutes from Bar Habor. Bangor offers plenty of shopping with many of the national chain stores (Target, Kohl's, Sears, JCPenney, Burlington Coat, LLBean outlet, Old Navy and others). There is also some shopping to be had in Ellsworth and Bar Harbor. I think sticking to the eastern part of the state will work well for you for "a little shopping" and "an adventure". Try some hiking or biking in Acadia. You do not say when you plan to take this trip but the closer to summer the more places that will be open for business but also their will be more people and lodging will be more expensive and less available. If you have any questions about the area feel free to message me.
