What is a good brokerage to go to for young person to start with?

Getting out of college and want to find a brokerage with reasonable rates that you don't have to buy so many stocks to qualify. I want to start slow and go from there.

  1. Vanguard is about the best brokerage firm out there. Fees are very low and they will do mutual funds for you at no cost. Most of their funds require a 3k minimum balance but the STAR Fund, (VGSTX) only requires 1k to open.
  2. TD Ameritrade offers $9.99 trades and no account minimum. Sharebuilder has $4 trades, but only one day per month. Also no minimum. If you only plan to trade stocks slowly, the sharebuilder account may be the best for you.
  3. i use the barclay site. Stockbrokers.barclays.com or somethin like that. 12.95 a trade and if you set up a direct debit you get big credit limit which can come in handy, good luck investing
  4. Scottrade. NO account maintenance, service, or inactivity fees. Free real-time stock quotes and charts. Free real-time Dow Jones news. Free "GainsKeeper" software for cost basis accounting. Excellent research sources. Excellent trading platforms (very user friendly). Excellent customer service (388 Branch offices nationwide). Member of SIPC (Securities Investor Protection Corporation). $500.00 minimum to open an account. $7.00 online trading commission for stock over $1.00 a share. Tutorial and webcast available for customers. For comparison purposes: Sharebuilder's real-time online trading commission is $9.95. T.D. Ameritrade's online trading commission is $9.99. Schwab's standard online trading commission is $12.95. E-Trade's standard online trading commission is $12.99.
