How to Short sell stocks online with a discount online brokerage? I am new to stocks overall. What are the most popular online commodity brokerage firms? Having invested in stocks for quite sometime, I am thinking to get into the commodity trading world. As a beginner in futures and options on futures, I would like to seek advice on the names of brokerage firms for such investment. I wonder what are the most popular online commodity brokerage firms (like TDAmeritrade for stocks) for setting up “self-directed” accounts with reasonable commissions, fees and requirements for opening accounts. Many thanks.

How to manage your own portfolio online without allowing brokerage fees to take too much of your money? I recently decided to try and take control of my own portfolio and open an online brokerage account. I would like to take at least 20 positions, but that would mean at least 199 dollars in brokerage fees alone. Since I have only about 1000 dollars per month available to invest, how can I diversify without spending close to 20% on brokerage fees alone? I also invest in mutual funds, but I want to try and beat their performance with my own picks, but since brokerage fees seem to eat up so much of my initial investmant, I would really have to hit it big with my picks before I made any money and so far I haven't even recovered the cost of my brokerage fees. Are mutual funds the only way to avoid high brokerage fees? I know that mutual funds charge management fees, but I don't think that it's 20% of my investment. Any suggestions?

If a brokerage firm goes bankrupt can you lose your money that is in securities? So say you have more money in securities than the SIPC will cover, you still shouldn't lose that money should you? Because each security is a partial ownership in a company that is not affiliated with the brokerage firm that just went bankrupt. You just use that brokerage firm to buy the security for you. I'm just kind of confused by this, so any help would be appreciated.
How can I avoid US brokerage fees from UPS? I just ordered a package from Acne Jeans in Sweden and it arrived today. I wasn't at home, so my roommate was the one who discovered that I have a $185 custom + brokerage fee on a pair of $400 shoes. It's ridiculous that the fees are nearly 50% of the product. UPS is supposed to come by tomorrow. Is there any way for me to avoid paying this fee or even reducing it? Thanks!
Who can file stock loss in a joint brokerage account? I have a joint brokerage account in the US. If my account has a loss of $6000, who can file the loss? Please let me know if the following scenarios are true. 1) Both can file the loss but limited to $3000 combined deduction. 2) Both can file the loss and "each" can deduct $3000 ($6000 combined deduction). I am the primary joint account holder and my dad is the secondary holder.

Why is it that some brokerage houses send out the 1099 forms as late as mid-march? I like to file my tax returns as early as possible. Most places of employment send out the W2 forms by Jan31. However brokerage houses, send it much later, and, BofA sends out the tax free IRA contributions forms almost as late as April15. It is then difficult to file the tax returns out correctly before April15, and, often have to send an amended return. How does one deal with this? Thanks for your time.
Why does my online brokerage charge a premium for options trading ? Thye charge $0.75/contract plus the $9.99 commission fee. Why the per contract charge ? Are they trying to discourage options trading ? Are they implying that options trading is more profitable than stocks ? I know the writer of the contract deserves a premium as incentive to write the option, but it appears that my brokerage isn't involved with writing them, some random individual in the market is.

What is your favorite low cost stock brokerage? Currently I have been using E Trade, my trades get executed immediately so I don't have any complaint about the service. The commission is 12.99 per trade so I was wondering if anyone has used a different brokerage that they liked and was cheaper than E Trade. Or if you are also using E Trade what has been your experience with them? Thanks for your time.
