Immigration? Hi, I have to write a compare/contrast essay on the immigration situation in the late 19th/early 20th century compared to the immigration situation to now. My book has everything I need on the situation in the time period stated, but I am not sure on the immigration situation today. We're all hearing about people coming over illegally, but it seems to me that people who do things legally have a hard time, waiting for a long time, endless paperwork, etc. Is this true? What does it take to immigrate from Mexico to the US? How much paperwork? How much money? What documents? What personal info? How long approximately does it take? Can the process be sped up for certain individuals, or is everyone in the same boat (no pun intended)? Is it easier to come over as a single person? As a family? I would just really like to know, since so many people are talking about immigration, a little of what it is like to immigrate. Stories of personal experience are welcome, especially if it is particularly demonstrative of the system as a whole, as well as factual info with sources, if possible. What would Jesus say about the factors that lead to immigration? I am neither Christian nor non-Christian. My question is not so much about "Jesus" as it is about spirituality in general in the US. Do you feel the popular prevailing views on immigration are balanced? Are they compassionate? What would the world's great spiritual leaders have to say about the inequalities that lead to lack of opportunity in our neighboring countries; as well as to genocide, poverty, and infant mortality? A guy I know is an immigration attorney in his mid-30's, working mainly with Mexican and Chinese clients, and it's pretty well-known that he trades fees for sex with some of the younger women in his clientele base. Technically this is an ethical violation, but it seems to be relatively common. Is it more common in immigration law than in other areas of law, or do lawyers in other fields commonly exchange sex for services?

Since The US immigration officers at the airport don't check the passports of foreigners who are leaving the US, how do they know how long each foreigners have stayed in the US? Foreigners who've overstayed could pretend not to have overstayed when they come to the US next time, could they?

I am writing a paper on "What America actively does to enforce immigration policy and to ensure that aliens visiting under a visa do not stay longer than the expiration date." My paper will discuss current laws pertaining to this issue, as well as current organizations and/or programs which handle such issues. Why not raise the penalty for illegal immigration to at least a felony? Since it costs the taxpayers so much, and so many illegals are imprisoned etc., and all of the other negatives that go with it, shouldn't they at least raise the penalty for illegal immigration to a felony level. Seems like Congress was thinking about doing this at one time. It would perhaps make illegals think twice, if they knew they would be facing stiff jail sentences and high fines.

What is the process immigration puts a foreigner that marries a Citizen through? I've been dating a girl for some time, I'm a US Citizen. She entered the country legally but overstayed her visa. We've lived together for some time, and want to get married. I've heard that immigration, in order to avoid fraud, aims to 'test' your marriage with a lot of questions and tests based on a 'traditional' marriage.
